Sean Taketa McLaughlin

 

Sean Taketa McLaughlin is an educator, media access advocate and nonprofit executive. He is the first executive director for Access Humboldt, a community media organization providing local access channels, broadband network connections, digital media production resources, training and support for local governments, tribes, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations and residents of Humboldt County, Calif. In 2007, Access Humboldt launched Digital Redwoods, an award-winning community broadband initiative. McLaughlin is also an adjunct fellow with the New America Foundation's Open Technology Institute.

A policy wonk, he works with the Alliance for Communications Democracy, the Alliance for Community Media, the California Broadband Policy Network, the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors, the Rural Broadband Policy Group and the Schools, Health & Libraries Broadband Coalition.

Educated at Dartmouth College, McLaughlin taught "Politics of the Media" in the 1980s at the University of Hawaii and served as the vice chair for the UH-Manoa Broadcast Communications Authority. McLaughlin started a successful broadcast media design, production and consulting firm based in Honolulu and served as director of telecommunications for the Honolulu City Council. He also developed projects as an international news consultant for Hawaii Public Television and the Hawaii-based co-production (with NHK-Japan and KCTS-Seattle) Asia Now.
